
Canadian creator David Morrell invented the Green Beret "John Rambo" character. The novel was later adapted by Stallone to appear in First Blood (1982), that also starred Richard Crenna (and Brian Dennehy). The film, which shocked audiences by its controversial commentary on the Vietnam conflict that was comparatively unfamiliar to American psyches, was an enormous hit. Whatever political viewpoints, Rambo: First Blood Part II (1985) was an immediate hit. It garnered more critical attention from many quarters due to its storyline about American MIAs that were held in Vietnam. The film's creators insist that bad publicity does not exist. John Rambo's second adventure resulted in a significant profit-maker for Stallone. It cemented his standing as one America's most popular male actors of the 1980s. Stallone was riding high of popularity made a call to Rocky Balboa, his sparring rival, to return to his fight to protect the American proud against his Soviet threat. It was the story of a Russian boxer named Ivan Drago played by Curt Dolph Lundgren. In spite of the level of violence in the final installment of the series being extreme, it caused a lot of controversy for "Rocky" lovers. The violence levels were especially high compared to the preceding Rocky movies.
